The inaugural meeting of the west coast chapter of the International Aroid Society will be held at the fabulous UC Botanical Garden in Berkeley, CA. Anyone interested in Aroids is encouraged to join us for this first program.

What's an Aroid?

Aroid is the common name for members of the Araceae family of plants, sometimes known as the Philodendron or Arum family. Aside from the many popular tropical Aroids we use as houseplants like Anthurium, Aglaonema, Philodendron and Monstera, a surprisingly large number of Aroids are adapted to growing outdoors in our West Coast climate. From Arisaema (Jack in the Pulpit) to Zantedeschia ( Calla Lilies ), there's something in the Aroid family for everyone on the west coast. Click here to learn more.

• Meet other local Aroid enthusiasts and help organize our new chapter.
• Exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Garden's Aroid collection with Director Paul Licht.
• Show & Tell: Bring in one of your Aroids to show off, and see specimens grown by other enthusiasts.
• Purchase unique plants including Amorphophallus, Anthurium and exotic Arisaema propagated from the Garden's own collections and additional rare aroids for your greenhouse, home and garden donated by local enthusiasts.

Directions

The UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley is located on the campus of UC Berkeley. The address is 200 Centennial Drive, Berkeley, CA 94720. Please note that most mapping programs need a little help finding addresses on Centennial Drive. Just keep driving up hill from the stadium and you'll see the gardens on your right before the first sharp bend. Paid parking is available across the street - you'll want to bring some small change since the machine only takes coins, $1's and $5's. Directions are available here. Admission to the garden is free for attendees. The garden has generously agreed to host us without charging admission - at the entrance kiosk, just mention you're attending the Aroid meeting. You may want to consider supporting the continued generosity of the garden by becoming a garden member, if you are not one already.
