Noted Aroider Alan Galloway, specialist on Amorphophallus, passes on May 11, 2020
By Tom Croat
It is with a sad heart that we announce the death of Alan Galloway, who passed away May 11, 2020 after a long bout with cancer, at his home in Raleigh, North Carolina. Alan was a specialist with the genus Amorphophallus and had one of the finest collections of tuberous plants in the world. Alan retired from North Carolina State University as Director of Systems Information Technology and was an active member of the IAS. I remember meeting Alan for the first time when he arrived at Dewey Fisk's home with a big truck of plants on his way to the IAS Show and Sale in Miami.
Alan took several trips to Asia and Europe in search of aroids, especially the tuberous aroids that he loved so much. It was only recently that we were working on a paper that Alan had submitted to be published in the IAS Newsletter. It was a long article with lots of excellent photos but with some content that was not aroids. Working with Lester Kallus, the editor of the on line IAS Newsletter, it was decided that Alan's paper was best suited for a digital version of the newsletter that was being created. His was the first article of that version.
Alan Galloway was born in 1961. He leaves behind a brother, Frank, and sister, Eloise, along with many other family members and many more friends and fellow plant enthusiasts who loved and cherished Alan. The aroid community will miss his keen intellect and his broad knowledge about the taxonomy of tuberous aroids, especially the Amorphophallus.
In hopes of producing something more lasting we encourage you to send your personal stories about Alan in order that these might be published in a memorial issue of the IAS Newsletter. Please send any communication to Thomas.Croat@mobot.org
