All species of Dracontium that were examined are diploids with 2n = 26, the only number known in the tribe Lasieae (Petersen, 1989). Dracontium has comparatively small chromosomes, similar to those of other members of the same tribe (Fig. 93-96). Petersen (1989) showed that chromosome size and number are highly variable in the Araceae and of great importance for taxonomy and evolution. However, chromosomes are of little taxonomic value at the specific level in Dracontium known.
