Notizbl. Bot. Gart. Berlin-Dahlem 11: 611. 1932. TYPE: Costa Rica. Alajuela: at San Ram6n, 1,200 m, Tonduz 17703 (B, holotype; CR, isotype).
Anthurium isonervium Standl. & L. 0. Wms., Ceiba 3:104. 1952. TYPE: Nicaragua. Dept. Río San Juan:m San Juan del Norte (Greytown), sea level, Charles Smith 61 (EAP, holotype; MO, US, isotypes).Epiphytic; stems short; cataphylls drying brown, weathering into fibers and persisting at base of leaves; petioles subterete, narrowly and bluntly sulcate, 4-20 cm long, 4-10 mm diam.; blades elliptic to broadly elliptic to obovate or oblanceolate, moderately thick, 22-54 cm long, 9.5-24 cm wide, acute to obtuse at base. Inflorescence spreading-pendent; peduncle 9-36 cm long, 3-9 mm diam., sometimes tinged reddish violet, conspicuously ribbed beneath opening of spathe; spathe coriaceous, yellow-green sometimes suffused with purple, lanceolate or oblong, 6-12 cm long, 1.5-2.8 cm wide; spadix green, tinged red-violet in later stages, 13-36 cm long, 5-11 mm diam. at base; berries pale red to dark violet purple (B & K Purple 3/7.5) sometimes pale lavender to white, flat at apex, 3-4 mm long, emerging a few at a time. See Croat (1983: 359) for a more complete description.
The species is known from Nicaragua to Panama from sea level to 1,400 m in wetter parts of tropical moist forest and in premontane wet, tropical wet, premontane rain, and lower montane wet forest life zones. In Panama, the species is most abundant on the Atlantic slope but occurs also on the Pacific slope near the Continental Divide. Anthurium ramonense is a member of section Porphyrochitonium and can be distinguished from other glandular-punctate species by its proportionally shorter, stouter petioles, its generally larger blades, and by its long, tapered, generally stout inflorescence. Fruit color is highly variable, so much so in fact as to place some doubt on the placement of certain collections. One collection (Croat 33984) produced mature fruits that were pale lavender, fading to white, while another (Croat 48913} had mature fruits that were dark violet purple.
