Compost:80%
peat continuously fertilized / 10% sand washed, 10% fine pumice, with a
thick drainage layer at the bottom.
Watering:During vegetation period keep evenly moist, not too wet, because
of danger of rotting; when the leaf starts withering, stop watering!
Fertilization:March - October weekly 1 x 0.3% Wuxal super 8/8/6" (or something
equivalent) until water runs out of the flowerpot. November - February
the same concentration (0.3% 8/8/6) every three weeks; stop fertilization
when the leaf is withering.
Temperature:maximum:
34°C optimum: 26°C minimum: 24°C ;
Air
humidity:80-85% relative humidity
Location
in a greenhouse:Keep in a very warm and humid greenhouse.
Light
conditions:at very light sun exposed places, in summer (April until
September) it is necessary to shade, in winter as much light as possible.
Dormancy:Vegetation
period between 12 and 20 months. When the leave is starting to wither,
the dormancy period begins (2-4 months). This period ends when a new bud
is visable.
|
Reproduction: Seed
handling:When the fruit is ripe, seeds must be cleaned from the pulp,
easiest if the pulp is fresh.
Sowing:Immediately after the fruit is ripe. Planting depth Approx. 5 mm, only one seed in a 9 cm pot with compost as mentioned above, bedded in sand; seed position not of interest; Germination conditions: Light conditions:see above Temperature:26°C; bottom heat also 26°C Watering:evenly moist, not too wet Dormancy: Because of small pots, occasional watering is required, do not store completely dry! |
Diseases
and Parasites:
Disease:
Attack of Fungi, which let to rotting of the tuber (only during dormancy)
Parasites:Nematodes and mealybugs of roots Prevention: Nematodes
infection: practically not to prevent, therefore ± sterile operating
is necessary; Mealybugs: biologically with Hypoaspis (predatory
mites) in and on the compost; chemically only with chemicals not containing
phosphoric acid esters, but caution, plants often incompatible to chemical
treatments; rotting: treat only large rottened areas, clean these
areas up to the healthy tissue, cover with charcoal powder |
Replant
during dormancy, after every vegetation period. The new pot should be three
times larger than the diameter of the tuber.
The
most important fact for a successful cultivation is to prevent nematode
infection by ± sterile handling!
